Flashcards for language learners

“A review debt I'll be servicing until I die.”

Bunshu is a flashcard app where that debt can't form. Each word comes back just before you'd forget it, in a session that stays the size you set. Miss a week and it's still ten minutes. Hear every word, free and offline.

What you get

Built around what language learners said.

01 · Forgetting

Words that stay, on the way to the level.

FSRS, the open memory model, brings each word back just before you'd forget it, fitted to your own reviews after a few hundred of them. Memory shows how much you could recall today and the day you reach your target, so the months to N1, HSK 5 or B2 are a line you can read, not a feeling.

Current 78% · target 90% · about 24 more days
Memory: how much you could recall today and the day you reach your target
02 · The debt

Miss a week. Your session stays ten minutes.

Every session is the words that fit the minutes you set. Come back after a missed week and it's the same size: the words you've started to forget come first, and new words wait until the old ones fit. The advice everyone gives, turn off new cards until the pile goes down, happens by itself.

03 · Hearing it

Hear every word, free, offline.

Every card reads aloud in your phone's own voice: the front, the back, both, or hands-free with the volume keys on a walk. Generated clips in a natural voice come with the vocabulary card and Convert to audio, and they stay on the card, so they play offline too.

04 · Context

Type the word. Bunshu fills the rest.

The vocabulary card fills its own reading, a spoken clip, an example sentence with its clip, and a picture where one fits, for you to check before you save. Words in context, not isolated. Twenty are free, then it's a Plus feature; a card from anywhere takes four taps.

05 · Tedium

A clear finish, no streak.

A session ends in minutes on a stamp with your numbers and up to five takeaways: the words to fix, what went worst, what went best. There is no streak to lose and no game to play. Rhythm shows your study days as a calendar, and a day off is simply blank.

06 · A short routine

On the bus, ten minutes a day.

Place your sessions in Schedule, with a reminder at each: the commute, the kettle, the walk. The Relaxed pace is about ten minutes a day, Balanced about twenty, and your own number if you want one. Bunshu never moves a session of yours, and it works offline.

Relaxed · 35 new words a week · about 10 mins a day
Schedule: the week as one timetable, each session with its minutes

Fair questions

What language learners ask.

I mine sentences with Yomitan. Does it plug in?

Honest: not at launch. What it has: a card from anywhere in four taps, paste a list to make cards at once, import any Anki deck, and a vocabulary card that fills its own reading, clip, example sentence and picture from the word.

I need audio on every card.

Read aloud reads every card in your phone's own voice, free, offline, hands-free if you like. Generated clips come with the vocabulary card (20 free, then Plus) and Convert to audio (25 free).

Pre-made decks?

Import Core 2k, Kaishi or any Anki deck with its audio and history. The shelf holds shared decks and Bunshu's own originals, Kanji N5 among them, free.

Will it go the Duolingo way?

Cards and reviews are free and unlimited on every plan, with no ads, in writing, and export is always free. Plus sells unlimited AI, not the basics.

I missed three weeks. Is it hopeless?

No. Your session stays the size you set, the words you've started to forget come back first, and new words wait until the old ones fit. No queue to clear.
