Flashcards for medical school

“My 800 reviews tomorrow.”

Bunshu is a flashcard app where tomorrow is the size you set. Your Anki deck imports whole, with its history. A date on the boards says Behind or On track. And the hours go where they count, because a card is never shown early.

What you get

Built around what med students said.

01 · The reviews

Tomorrow is the size you set.

Every session is the cards that fit the minutes you give it. Miss four days and it's the same size: the cards that waited come first, most at risk first, and new cards pause until they fit. A deck with a date keeps introducing its cards at its plan's rate. Nobody is shown 800 due.

8 minutes means 8 minutes

02 · The hours

Reviewing early adds almost nothing.

By the FSRS model's arithmetic, a card whose memory lasts 196 days, reviewed 5 days after its last review, gets about 7% longer. Reviewed on time, it roughly triples. Bunshu never shows a card early to fill time, so the hours go on the cards that need them. When your own answers start to slow, it asks once whether you'd like a break.

03 · The deck, and the boards

Bring your deck. Give it a date.

Your Anki deck imports with its images, audio, tags and review history, and suspended cards arrive hidden, so two years of progress come with you. Give it your exam date and Bunshu says On track or Behind, with the recall it expects on the day. The day before is one full pass.

04 · The missed day

Skip a weekend. Lose nothing.

There is no streak to lose: a day off is a blank day. Come back and the session is its usual size. If a dated deck slipped, Heads Up says what the days cost and what would catch it up, in numbers, and you decide. Nothing scolds you.

No streaks · a rhythm instead
Heads Up open: what you have, what you need, and the changes that would close the gap, each with its number
05 · Where you stand

Which cards are slipping.

How much you could recall today, and the day you reach your target. On Plus, Strong and weak names your weakest topics and cards and what is slipping, and Learning patterns shows your best hours and when your recall drops in a sitting, each ending in what to do.

06 · Images

Occlusion, with numbered boxes.

Add a picture and hide parts of it. Boxes are numbered in the order you add them, revealed one per card or all at once. Anki's own occlusion cards and the older add-on's masks both import. An image sits on a card only where the point needs it.

07 · On the go

Reviews on a walk, with your volume keys.

Every card reads aloud in your phone's own voice, free and offline, hands-free if you like. Rate with the volume keys on Android or a clicker in your pocket, and the same design runs on iPhone, Android, the iPad and the web, offline.

Fair questions

What med students ask.

I live in AnKing with AnkiHub updates. Can't leave.

Honest: Bunshu imports your Anki deck whole, with images, tags, review history and your suspended cards hidden, so your two years of progress come with you. It does not sync AnkiHub's updates; a deck followed on Bunshu's shelf updates with a review step instead. If the daily AnkiHub update is what you need, Bunshu is not for you yet.

I can't afford to miss a day.

Then don't. But if you do, the session stays the size you set; a deck with a date keeps introducing its cards at its plan's rate, and Heads Up says what the day cost and what fixes it. Nothing punishes you.

I need 200 new cards a day.

Set it: the pace takes your own number, and a dated deck introduces cards at the rate its date needs. Bunshu never shows a card early, since that adds almost nothing to memory, which is where the hours go.

Image occlusion?

Yes: numbered boxes, reveal one per card or all at once, and your Anki occlusions import.
